Consumer Medicine Information (CMI)
D-REGLIS
• Ingredients and active components
D-Reglis tablet contains at least 380 mg standardized dry extract of liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.). The level of glycyrrhizinic acid in the extract is reduced to less than 3%.
• What D-REGLIS is used for
- Peptic and duodenal ulcers
- Acid hypersecretion
- Flatulence
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
- Prevention of peptic ulcers due to usage of NSAIDs
• How D-REGLIS works
The therapeutic effect of liquorice is as a result of its various flavonoids. Flavonoids in this medicine prevent metabolism of prostaglandins which increase the level of prostaglandins in the upper digestive tract. Prostaglandins, on the one hand, decrease acid secretion from parietal cells and, on the other hand, provide a protective coating for the digestive tract mucosal cells by increasing excretion of mucosa and bicarbonate. These compounds also increase the production of gastric glycoprotein.
Liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin are two other components in the tablets which have papaverine- like spasmolytic effects in the gastrointestinal track. Due to the elimination of glycyrrhizin, the mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid side effects of liquorice has been minimized in this formulation.
D-Reglis tablet also contains calcium carbonate which increases the antacid effect of this medicine.

• Side effects
Pure extract of liquorice contains high levels of glycyrrhizinic acid and can cause mineralocorticoid reactions in the form of water and sodium retention, potassium excretion and increase in blood pressure. However, these adverse reactions are not often seen with D-Reglis, as the level of glycyrrhizinic in the liquorice extract is lowered from 30% to 3% through hydrolysis. If this medicine is used over long periods (more than 6 consecutive months), it may cause hypertension; however, having two drug-free weeks would alleviate the above-mentioned reactions.
