Consumer Medicine Information (CMI)
SENA-GRAPH
• Ingredients and active components
Sena-Graph syrup is made from standardized extract of Senna leaves (Cassia angustifolia L.). Each 100 ml of Sena-Graph syrup contains 995 mg standardized dry extract.
• What SENA-GRAPH is used for
Complete evacuation of colon before Radiography, Colonoscopy or Surgery.
• How SENA-GRAPH works
The healing effect of Senna is due to its Anthraquinone (Hydroxy Anthracene) glycosides (especially A&B Sennosides). Sennosides A & B are metabolized by the bacteria in the colon and are converted to active metabolites such as Rheinanthron.
Rheinanthron:
- Increases the synthesis and secretion of prostaglandins especially PGE2 in the colon. So it causes:
- stimulation of peristaltic contractions, inhibition of local contraction of muscles of the large intestine,
- Secretion of fluids and electrolytes into the intestinal lumen (increasing the secretion of mucosa and active chlorides) and helps defecation.
- Reduces intestinal fluid absorption.
Furthermore, Senna contains Histamine and 5-Hydroxy Triptamine (5-HT) that have purgative effects.
